Parking, Transfers & Pre-Cruise Hotels
The costs outside the cruise bill are the easiest to cut.
Get a Free Cruise QuoteThe cheapest cruise in the world gets expensive if you pay too much to reach the pier. Parking, airport transfers and the hotel the night before are the costs that sit outside the cruise bill — and the easiest to cut with a little planning.
Getting to the Pier: The Main Choices
| Option | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Port-run garage or lot | Convenience, short walk or shuttle | Daily rate for the whole cruise; can fill up |
| Private off-site lot with shuttle | Longer cruises, saving on parking | Shuttle timing on busy mornings; read recent reviews |
| Park-and-cruise hotel | Drivers who want a night near the port | Whether parking for the cruise is really included |
| Rideshare or taxi | Short cruises, travelers living nearby | Surge pricing on embarkation mornings |
| Friend or family drop-off | Everyone | Terminal traffic; agree a pickup time for return day |
Compare the total for the whole sailing, not the daily rate. A one-week cruise parked at the port can cost more than two rideshare trips, while for a family with luggage on a two-week cruise, an off-site lot with a shuttle may win. Our sister site Free Cruise Parking compares the options port by port.
Flying In and the Night Before
If you fly to the port, arrive the day before. One hotel night is much cheaper than missing the ship, and many cruise lines and insurers expect it. To keep that night affordable:
- Stay near the airport or a transit line rather than on the waterfront, then ride to the port in the morning.
- Look for hotels with free airport shuttles, and ask whether they run a cruise-port shuttle too.
- Price the cruise line’s own air and hotel packages against booking separately.
- Book a refundable rate in case the itinerary changes.
Flights, timing and the cruise lines’ air programs are covered in detail on our sister site Cruise Airfare.

Transfers: Ship’s Bus or Your Own Ride?
Cruise lines sell transfers between the airport and the ship. They are simple and your bags may be handled for you, but they are usually priced per person, so a family of four can often save with a single taxi, rideshare or shared shuttle. On disembarkation day, the line’s transfer can be worth it if your flight is tight and the airport is far. Either way, check whether the port has an official taxi rank and agree fares in advance.

One last tip for return day: book your flight home late enough to clear the ship and the terminal without paying for a rushed taxi. Disembarkation on a big ship can take a while, and an afternoon flight is usually the cheaper and calmer choice.
Traveling as a group? Shared shuttles, one large rideshare or a single hotel block can cut the per-person cost of getting to the pier sharply. Agree the plan before booking so everyone arrives on the same morning.
